BNO Visa (UK)

BNO visa is British National (Overseas) visa.

BNO refers to a person who was a British overseas territories citizen (including Hong Kong) who was register as a British national (overseas) before 1 July 1997.

With a successfully approved BNO Visa, the applicant will be allowed to live, work or study in the UK.

Who can apply for BNO Visa?

As a BNO holder, you can apply for BNO visa.

You may also apply for BNO visa if you are 18 years old or above.

The prerequisite is that the applicant must have a permanent home in Hong Kong, when applying outside of the UK.

BNO Visa Dependants

The applicant's family members can also apply for BNO visa with the applicant, as dependants, if they are eligible. The family members must apply at the same time as the main applicant.

The main purpose of the BNO Visa is for the applicant and his/her family members to work or study in the UK. There are exceptions to the type of work. For example, with a BNO visa, the person will still not be allowed to work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach in the UK.

A dependant can include the main applicant's:

  • Husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner
    Child or grandchild under 18
    Child 18 or older, born on or after 1 July 1997 (and their partner or child under 18)
    Parent, grandparent, brother, sister, son or daughter (18 or older), if they live with the main applicant and are very dependent on the main applicant for their care

What is the duration of the BNO Visa?

Option 1 is: BNO visa application for 2 years and 6 months

Option 2 is: BNO visa application for 5 years

Documents Required:

  • Original of the applicant's passport;
    Original of the passports of the persons applying alongside the main applicant;
    HKID cards of the applicant, and HKID cards of the persons applying alongside the main applicant;
    TB test certificates of the main applicant, and the persons applying alongside the main applicant;
    Proof of financial asset of the main applicant;
    Proof of the main applicant with his/her family members;
    Proof of UK residential address when arriving in the UK;
